Why I Write Blogfest

First, a big “THANK YOU” to Kayeleen for hosting this blogfest. A second big “THANK YOU” to Tara for telling the blogging world about it.

Why do I write? Well, I tried playing the lottery to become rich and famous. Living at the Four Seasons in New York City and jet setting to exotic places around the world while surviving on haute cuisine and room-service, seemed to be an appropriate way to spend my time. But, the lottery? That seemed WAY too easy. I want risk and adventure! So I decided I must pursue my dreams the hardest way possible. Nothing good comes easy right? And what path, pray tell, has the least odds of monetary success? Well writing of course! So here I am, pursuing my dreams by walking the hardest and most bumpiest path I could fathom.

Yeah ok, you caught me. That’s not quite the reason why I write, but it’s a nice cover story. I’ve been keeping a journal since my early teens, and we are going to pretend that wasn’t very long ago. When thoughts piled up in my head, I’d put them on paper, it was the best way I knew how to clear my mind. I didn’t study writing, not on my own or the conventional way of schooling. I did, on the other hand, take a personal interest in spirituality and different religions and spent a good part of my twenties studying them on my own time. This left me with a whole lot more of those pesky thoughts that needed to be written down.

I started writing novels and short stories here and there. Then I would abandon them to the calls of life, work and so on. To make a long story short, or well, less long… after my sister’s murder the thoughts became overbearing. They NEEDED to get out. It wasn’t pesky little nagging voices anymore, more like screaming banshees stuck in a blender. There was no more work to be done, not much of a life to get in the way anymore, finally I didn’t just need to write, I had TIME to write.

So here I am, writing my little heart out – or more appropriately, writing the screaming banshees out. Oh, and well, being an avid reader has played a pretty important role in my choices as well.

A little bit of everything

Because of the awesome blog hop this weekend, I've got a little catching up to do, so this post is going to be a little bit of everything.

First, a big thank you to RJR for hosting this Media Mayhem Blog Hop - What a treat it was. I was able to find and follow some great new blogs AND it was a trip down media-memory lane!

Second: If you haven't already put your name in for the blog contest giveaway at UnicornBell, get a move it on people!

Third: After much procrastinating, I finally finished the 3rd book in the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich: Three to get Deadly. Now you may interpret that to mean I didn't enjoy the book, since it took me over a month to get through 321 pages - but you would be dead wrong. I've been treating myself to just a few pages a day because I don't have book #4 yet and I didn't want the adventure to end, sadly I still don't have the 4th book. So I will be sans-Plum for a little while :(

Fourth: I finished the first draft of the 3rd chapter of my novel yesterday! Woot woot!!!

Fifth and final: If you haven't submitted a piece to The Memory Eater Anthology yet, get at it! I'll be starting a hashtag on twitter today for the anthology - follow it or add your comments with the tag #memoryeater

I think that does it for today! A special thanks to everyone who participated in this weekends Media Mayhem blog hop again, it was really fantastic.

Blog Hop Day #3 - Blogs

Monday - Blogs
Here is a chance to share something about 3 blogs you follow and why, it may be one that you have found on Saturday or Sunday, or one you have followed for a while.

Blog #1
The Leaky Pencil
What can I say? Chris is a Canadian author, also from Ontario, like myself and he's a smart and funny guy. He also provided a flash fiction challenge on his blog, and I'm a sucker for flash fiction.

Blog #2
One Voice - Write Right
I met Joni through the F2K writing course. Her blog has an interesting and honest voice - plus it's loaded with tons of fun and useful information.

Blog #3
JM Tohline
I'm new to this blog, and I've loved it so far. I wish him great success with his novel "The Great Lenore". I can hardly wait to get my hands on it.

Blog Hop Day #2 - Movies

Sunday - Films
Post about 3 films you like, again you choose how to present, but the idea is to to let us know why so we can get to know you a little better.

Movie #1
Dirty Dancing
Why? Because I was at just the right influential age when this movie came out, and it became a staple of my youth.

Movie #2
Constantine and Stigmata and The Order
I know, I cheated - but I like all three of them for the same reasons. I love movies with religious or spiritual themes. The good vs. evil, God vs Satan, People vs. The Church... either way, these movies are my cup of sinister tea.

Movie #3
Wonder Boys
Come on folks, this is a blog about writing -- I couldn't NOT choose a film that inspires the writer in me every time I watch it. If you haven't seen this one yet, give it a whirl.

Blog Hop Day #1 - Songs

Saturday - Songs
Post about 3 songs you like, they may or may not be your favourite. Blog how you want, include Youtube clips, or written lyrics, its your blog you choose the style, but tell us why you chose them and let your creative side be free !

Song#1
The Flatliners - The Eulogy Song
I can write a long list of beautiful mourning songs to play at a funeral, but there are few out there that are actually a little upbeat. On May 27th 2011, we put my murdered sister's body to rest in a cemetery - 3 years after her death. At her funeral, held a few days after her body was found, the song that played over the speakers of the funeral was "Season in the Sun" and a super-talented woman sang an amazing rendition of "Amazing Grace" that gave the packed parlor-room chills. But this year, this day of laying her body to rest now that the trials have been completed, I found this song to be far more appropriate. My sister liked her music loud, she would dance anywhere - so I like to think this one is a little more her style.

Song#2
Foo Fighters - Everlong
Why do I love this song? Perhaps it's the awesome lyrics, maybe it's the great music, but my guess is -- I love it because it's one of the few songs I can sing on Guitar Hero almost perfectly.

Song#3
Meatloaf - Bat out of Hell
I would be happy with pretty much any song on this album. In fact, if I were stuck on a deserted island and could only bring one CD, this would be the one. Really, who doesn't need a little rock-opera in their lives?

End of class

While checking out Kat's new blog (check it out, she's awesome), I realized I hadn't posted about the end of the F2K course.

After six lessons, six assignments, a ton of feedback given and received, the F2K free writing course came to an end a few weeks ago. I'm pleased to say that my final submission was chosen by my mentor to represent our class in a final voting contest. Did I win the final? Nope, not even close. But I know what 'they' mean by saying 'it's an honor just to be nominated'. The winning submission was sublime, even I voted for it. It was a take on Cinderella in a whole new light.

I'm still debating on whether or not I will join the August session of F2K, if I decide to do so, it will be because of the amazing people I've met in the 'halls' of the school.

You can read my final submission here . My mom suggested I veer from the "dark and twisty" side for the final assignment and I did so. I'd appreciate any comments or feedback.

My First Blog Hop

I'm joining my first Blog Hop. Do I have any idea what that means? Not particularly, but I've enjoyed reading the results of other Blog Hops so I thought I'd give it a go.
Visit RJR Daydreamer for details on this Hop. Looks like fun and you still have until the weekend to join.

Luck in the Lost

Those who follow me on Twitter already know that my computer ate up over 2500 words of my first chapter(or more realistically, I forgot to save after a re-write... pfff.. semantics). This brought on days of soul-crushing self-pity and loss of self-worth. I couldn't write a word (ok, in all fairness, I wrote words, just nothing productive). I couldn't eat or sleep (well, I slept, but I tossed and turned for hours first) and then (oh and I ate too, maybe a little here and there...) finally, last night, in the turmoils of trying to sleep in my manor (by manor, I mean small little apartment) inspiration struck me like a lightning bolt driven by Zeus himself! (or maybe more like a lightning bug flickering in a field, but you get the idea).
So this morning, I got up with the enthusiasm of a kid on Christmas morning (meaning, when I got out of bed I didn't curse and swear at the morning light) and jumped right on to the computer to start typing away at my new and revised first chapter... again. (After I had a smoke, checked my gourmet ranch and had a few sips of tea of course.)
The results? A much more intriguing opening chapter! YAY ME! I'm nowhere close to the 2500 words I lost, but I got the ball rolling. Here's hoping it doesn't hit a snag and stop dead. Oh, and I remembered to save at 5 minute intervals (and by 5 minute intervals, I really mean whenever I actually remembered to.)

Poll Results are In

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to vote on the poll.
The questions was:

When aiming for a target number of words written per day, do writings such as journals, long letters, blog posts, articles etc. count towards your goal OR does your word count only work towards a long piece such as a novel or article for publishing?

The results were:
every word counts: 42%
Words to be published count: 0%
It Depends on another factor: 42%
Only words for a novel count: 14%

Between these results and the comments left here, as well as on facebook's Writer's Inspiration page I've come to the conclusion that it's one of those things that typically work as "To each their own". It's an individual choice.

Thank you all again for participating!

Which words count - Poll

Hi all,

In setting my writing goals, I've come to a bit of a conundrum. I've read, and heard, writer's profess that they aim to hit a certain word count daily. But what counts towards a word count? If my goal is 3000 words a day, after this post am I down to 2900? What about an email, text messaging or twitter? Which words, in your opinion, count towards your daily words count? Please click on the poll to the right and let me know your opinion.
Forever grateful,
Nina
